Shopify Conversion Rate: How to Calculate It and Diagnose a Low Rate
Learn the Shopify conversion-rate formula, choose the right denominator and troubleshoot traffic, product-page, checkout and offer problems.
Shopify ecommerce conversion rate is orders divided by store sessions, multiplied by 100. Use the same date range and definition for both numbers, then diagnose the funnel instead of judging the rate without traffic or margin context.
Shopify conversion rate formula
For ecommerce, conversion rate is usually orders divided by sessions, multiplied by 100. If 50 orders come from 1,000 sessions, the session conversion rate is 5%.
The event must be explicit. Purchase conversion rate, add-to-cart rate, checkout completion and email signup rate are different metrics. Name the event and denominator in your report.
Why the denominator matters
| Denominator | Best used for | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Sessions | Store-level purchase conversion | One person can create multiple sessions. |
| Users | Customer or audience-level behavior | User stitching and privacy settings affect the count. |
| Landing-page visits | Page-level conversion diagnosis | Do not compare it with store-wide sessions. |
| Checkout sessions | Checkout completion | It measures a later funnel stage than store CVR. |
A practical Shopify funnel diagnosis
| Signal | Likely next question |
|---|---|
| Low ad CTR | Is the audience, creative or promise relevant? |
| Good CTR, weak product-page engagement | Does the landing page match the ad and make the product value clear? |
| Add-to-cart is healthy, checkout is weak | Are shipping, payment, trust or delivery expectations creating friction? |
| Conversion improves but profit falls | Did discounts, shipping or product mix erase contribution margin? |
What to check before chasing a benchmark
- Segment new versus returning customers; returning customers often convert differently.
- Separate mobile and desktop; a blended rate can hide a mobile checkout problem.
- Compare channel, campaign and product mix; high-intent branded traffic is not the same as cold paid social.
- Use revenue per visitor, AOV and contribution profit beside conversion rate.
- Check tracking before redesigning the store; a missing or duplicated purchase event can create a false trend.
