What Is Conversion Rate? Formula, Examples and What to Fix First
Understand the conversion-rate formula, choose the right denominator and diagnose whether the problem is traffic, offer, page or checkout.
Conversion rate is completed conversions divided by the relevant visits, users or sessions. The number is only useful when the conversion event and denominator are clearly defined.
Conversion rate definition
Conversion rate is the percentage of a defined audience that completes a defined action. The action could be a purchase, signup, demo request, download or lead form submission.
The word defined matters. A purchase conversion rate, landing-page signup rate and checkout completion rate answer different questions and should not be mixed.
The formula
Conversion rate = conversions ÷ relevant visits or users × 100.
For example, 80 orders from 4,000 sessions equals a 2% session conversion rate. If you switch to users, the result may change because one user can create several sessions.
How to diagnose a low rate
| Signal | Likely question |
|---|---|
| Low CTR | Is the message or audience relevant enough to earn the click? |
| Good CTR, low landing-page conversion | Does the page match the promise and make the next step obvious? |
| Good add-to-cart, low purchase | Are price, shipping, trust or checkout friction blocking the final step? |
| High conversion, poor profit | Is the offer converting but the unit economics broken? |
Do not optimize the number in isolation
A higher conversion rate is not automatically better if it comes from a tiny, low-quality audience or a deep discount that destroys contribution margin. Pair conversion rate with revenue per visitor, customer acquisition cost and profit.
