TikTok Shop Category Requirements (US 2026): Who Needs Approval?
Short answer: TikTok Shop uses different gates for regulated products. In the US, a product can need category-level qualification, product-level review or invite-only access. Beauty and personal care may require category qualification, jewelry may require qualification or listing review with matching evidence, and dietary supplements are currently invite-only. The current policy for your seller type, product and market is the final authority.
This US policy guide was checked August 18, 2026. It is not legal advice or an approval guarantee. TikTok may request more documents during review or after a listing is live. Start with TikTok's Restricted Products Policy, then open the policy for the exact product.
The three qualification paths
| Path | What it means | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Category-level qualification | Documents are reviewed for a product category | Prepare the category file before building a large catalog |
| Product-level qualification | Evidence is reviewed for each product or listing | Every SKU needs matching documents and photos |
| Invite-only qualification | Only selected sellers can access the category | Confirm access before buying inventory or packaging |
The policy path is not the same as approval. TikTok can request additional evidence and can review a listing again after it goes live.
Which TikTok Shop categories may need approval?
TikTok's current US Guide to Category Qualification lists these product types as requiring qualification or a category-specific policy review before listing:
| Product type | What to do before sourcing or listing |
|---|---|
| Automotive parts | Open the current category policy and check the product, safety and documentation gate |
| Baby and maternity | Confirm the category path and any child-safety or product evidence requirements |
| Beauty and personal care | Check the category qualification flow, labels, claims and seller-role documents |
| Dietary supplements | Confirm invite-only access first, then prepare the supplement evidence |
| Electronics | Check the applicable safety, model and conformity documents |
| Food and beverage (shelf-stable) | Verify food, labeling, shelf-life and seller-role requirements |
| Household appliances | Check the appliance category and any required safety certification |
| Kids' fashion | Confirm the product category and any child-product documentation |
| Live plants | Review the current plant-specific policy before purchasing inventory |
| Medical devices and supplies | Check the device classification and applicable FDA or conformity evidence |
| Pet supplies | Confirm whether the product needs category qualification or additional safety evidence |
| Sports and outdoor recreation | Check the exact product type, claims and safety documentation |
| Toys and hobbies | Confirm age, safety and product-specific qualification requirements |
This list is a routing step, not a blanket approval. TikTok may apply a category-level gate, a product-level review or invite-only access, and the exact requirement can depend on the SKU, seller role, market and account. Use Seller Center and the policy for the exact product before treating any category as open.
Common documents to prepare
The category qualification guide says requirements are category-specific, but common evidence can include:
- clear product and packaging photos that match the intended listing;
- purchase invoices or proof of purchase from the manufacturer or distributor when the category accepts reseller evidence;
- FDA registration or other regulatory records for applicable products;
- lab reports, certificates of conformity, safety reports or authenticity documents where the product policy requires them; and
- complete labels, ingredients, warnings, directions, expiry or shelf-life information and accurate claims.
Documents should be valid, legible, complete and unaltered. A marketplace order confirmation or a screenshot is not automatically acceptable proof. Keep a source-to-SKU evidence folder so the seller name, supplier, product, model, label and document all describe the same item.
Category requirements at a glance
| Category | Current US gate | Evidence to prepare | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dietary supplements | Invite-only; invited sellers must also satisfy the supplements and restricted-products policies | Seller-role documents, purchase evidence where applicable, product-label images and valid lab reports; manufacturers may need FDA facility and cGMP evidence | No invitation, stale reports, mismatched supplier evidence or unsupported claims |
| Beauty and personal care | Category qualification may be required; requirements vary by role and product | Invoices, cosmetic or Drug Facts labels, manufacturer information, expiry and shelf-life evidence | Listing, label, invoice, claim or shelf-life mismatch |
| Jewelry, watches and accessories | Product-level qualification may be required; unqualified jewelry is prohibited and requirements vary by product type | Matching product/packaging photos, test reports and authenticity or gemstone certificates where required | Certificate does not match the item, purity, carat, cut or photos |
| Other regulated categories | Follow the product-specific policy in Qualification Center | Read the exact policy before sourcing | Treating a general checklist as permission to list |
Dietary supplements: confirm access first
TikTok's current US Dietary Supplements Requirements says sellers must be invited to offer products in this category. Supplements are also subject to the Restricted Products Policy.
For manufacturers, importers and repackers, the policy may require:
- proof of valid FDA food-facility registration with matching establishment details;
- current cGMP certification;
- a valid product lab report through an accepted laboratory route; and
- clear front, back and Supplement Facts label images.
For resellers, the policy says the invoice or proof of purchase may need to be issued by the manufacturer or distributor, dated within the last 180 days, show the same seller name and address, contain the applicable products and reflect a combined purchase of at least 400 units. Retail order confirmations are not accepted for the reseller evidence described there. Resellers may also need a valid lab report and label images.
Go/no-go rule: confirm invitation and document availability before paying for inventory, packaging or creator samples. A valid invoice does not cure missing access or an unsupported product claim.
Beauty and personal care: labels and shelf life matter
TikTok's Beauty and Personal Care Products Requirements says sellers may need category qualification and that requirements vary by seller role.
| Seller role | Evidence that may be required |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer, importer or repacker | Establishment information, product label, ingredients and applicable regulatory evidence |
| Reseller | An invoice in the stated period, in English, with supplier details and a product/category match |
| Any seller | Product photos, warnings, directions, expiry information and accurate claims |
The policy says products with expiry, best-before, manufacturing-date or shelf-life information must follow the separate shelf-life requirements. It says products should have at least 365 days of remaining shelf life on delivery; if less remains, the seller must clearly disclose it before purchase and in the listing.
Some beauty products are prohibited, including products with unverified medical applications, incorrect cosmetic/drug labeling, certain bleaching or whitening products, products not packaged for US retail sale and products affected by recalls or restricted ingredients. Do not infer TikTok permission merely because another marketplace accepts the item.
Jewelry: match every piece of evidence
TikTok's Jewelry Products Requirements says requirements vary by jewelry type. The US Restricted Products Policy places jewelry, watches and accessories in the product-level qualification section, and unqualified jewelry is prohibited. A category approval or a generic certificate is not permission to list every SKU.
The current US policy gives examples such as:
- gold: matching product and packaging photos, country-of-origin information when required, an accepted lab report and an authenticity certificate or letter showing the product description and purity;
- diamonds: an accepted certificate with cut, carat and matching product details;
- ruby, sapphire and emerald products: an accepted gemstone certificate whose details match the product image and description.
The useful rule is evidence continuity: the listing, packaging, photos, test report and certificate must describe the same item. If a certificate is for another stone, purity or carat, stop the review and fix the evidence before submitting.
Restricted, prohibited and rejected are different
| Status | Meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Restricted | May be sellable after qualification or documentation | Apply through Qualification Center |
| Prohibited | Cannot be listed under the applicable policy | Choose another product or seek official clarification |
| Rejected | Submitted evidence or the listing did not pass review | Read the reason, correct the source problem and resubmit |
| Shop approval failure | Seller onboarding did not pass | Fix seller verification; shop approval does not clear every category |
A product-level rejection does not prove that the entire category is banned. Category qualification also does not approve every SKU automatically.
If your first question is whether an item is allowed at all rather than which documents it needs, use the TikTok Shop prohibited and restricted products checklist. This page owns the qualification and evidence workflow; that checklist owns the banned-versus-restricted decision.
Pre-application checklist
Create one row per SKU and keep the evidence beside the claim.
| Check | Pass condition | If it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Account access | Seller Center shows the category or invitation path | Ask official support or your Account Manager before sourcing |
| Seller role | Manufacturer, importer, repacker or reseller is identified correctly | Rebuild the document list for the actual role |
| Supplier chain | Invoice, manufacturer and seller name/address form one chain | Request compliant evidence or stop the SKU |
| Product identity | Title, SKU, photos, packaging and documents match | Fix the listing or documents |
| Test/certificate | Source, date and product details meet the category policy | Obtain accepted evidence; never edit a document |
| Labels and claims | Ingredients, warnings, directions and claims are accurate | Remove unsupported claims and review compliance |
| Shelf life | Expiry and disclosure meet the live policy | Hold or replace inventory |
| Category | Chosen category is accurate and does not bypass a restriction | Reclassify honestly and apply for permission |
How to apply
TikTok's Applying for Category Permission guide describes this workflow:
- Sign in to the correct US Seller Center account.
- Open Products and choose Manage Products.
- Select Add Product, upload images and enter the product name.
- Choose the correct category and select Apply now when the category is restricted.
- Upload the documents requested in Add Category Authorization.
- Submit the category application and listing for review as directed.
The Category Qualification guide says missing, incorrect or low-quality documents are common rejection causes. It directs sellers to the rejection message and the related product policy before resubmitting.
Worked example: three almost-ready products
Illustrative scenarios, not platform benchmarks:
| Candidate | Evidence on hand | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Supplement reseller | Invoice is 200 days old, no accepted lab report and no invitation | Stop. Access and evidence gates are unresolved |
| Beauty product | Correct invoice and labels, but 90 days of shelf life remain and the listing says nothing | Hold. Check the shelf-life policy and disclose or replace before listing |
| Gold necklace | Photos are clear, but the authenticity letter describes a different purity | Stop. The certificate and listing do not match |
The goal is not a universal pass score. It is to expose the next missing proof before you spend money or submit an application.
If TikTok rejects the application
- Open the rejection reason in Seller Center.
- Identify the affected category, product and missing or mismatched evidence.
- Fix the source record: invoice, label, report, certificate, claim, expiry or category selection.
- Upload clear, complete and unaltered documents in the requested format.
- Resubmit through Qualification Center and save the evidence list and timestamp.
- If the reason is unclear, use official Seller Support; do not create duplicate shops or alter documents to bypass review.
TikTok may request additional evidence while a product is live. Approval is a continuing compliance obligation, not a permanent badge.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need approval to sell supplements on TikTok Shop US?
The current US requirements say access is invite-only. An invitation does not replace the required product, label and testing documents.
Do beauty products need category qualification?
They may. The requirement depends on the product and seller role, so check Qualification Center and the current beauty policy.
Can I sell jewelry without a certificate?
Do not assume that. Testing or authenticity evidence varies by jewelry type; verify the exact product policy first.
Are restricted products banned?
No. Restricted products may be permitted after qualification. Prohibited products are a separate policy status.
Does category qualification approve every SKU?
Not necessarily. TikTok may request product-level evidence or additional documents, and every listing must still match the policy.
What should I do before buying inventory?
Confirm access, seller role, category path, supplier evidence, labels, tests or certificates, claims and shelf life. If one is unknown, pause or keep the purchase small.
